Skipton in Craven Civic Society
The Skipton in Craven Civic Society was formed in 1961, with the intention of, actively, maintaining the town's unique character.
The foundation of the Society hoped to prevent building development in the town, which could be considered inappropriate due to its scale, materials or use. To achieve this goal five aims were formulated;
To promote high standards of planning and architecture in and affecting Skipton and the surrounding area. To educate the public in geography, history, architecture and natural history of the area. To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the area. To pursue these objects by any means considered appropriate including meetings, lectures, study groups, exhibitions and publications. To co-operate with others in the attainment of the above objectives.
The Society's committee, made up of ordinary members, assisted by those with specialist expertise, monitor all Skipton planning applications and where appropriate makes comments to the District Planning Committee.
The Society is also engaged in assisting self help groups trying to improve and preserve areas.
The Society has a good record of service to Skipton and its people. If our aims and activities interest you, then please join us.
